10 Summer Must-Haves for Mom

Every gal has her go-to items for summer. Those staples, without which, she might not be able to remain her most fabulous self throughout the long days and nights, nor be ready at a moment's notice to attend the exciting events (both casual and upscale) that she might be invited to. From lounging poolside to steamy summer nights out, here are some of the items you should not live without while the heat is on.

Flirty dresses
Long or short, solid or print, with straps or without; no matter the style, a dress is a girl’s best friend in the summer. Boasting some of the cutest frocks to rock right now (I have to credit my good friend The Dress Junkie for that phrase) is Modcloth—the cutest little “mod/retro/indie” site in all the land. Topping my wish list is the Haute Child in the City dress, a lemony yellow burst of floral, strapless goodness. The pleated skirt has the perfect amount of flounce to match the bounce in your summer step, and the exposed zipper gives it the advantage of being girly with a trendy edge. Pair it with strappy sandals or fun flats, a statement ring and simple earrings and you’re out the door.

Stunna Shades
I had to borrow from my hip hop friends on this one: “stunna shades” are just that—they protect your beautiful little baby browns (blues, greens, hazels) from the sun and make you look stunning. What more could a girl ask for? Shimmy on over to Bluefly.com for designer sunnies at budget prices. They carry the classics like the Ray Ban aviator as well as other designer glasses in all shapes and sizes. Designers include Prada, Christian Dior, Jimmy Choo and Tom Ford. I will be blocking out the sun with a wonderful pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs lovelies that I scored for approximately $70 bucks!

Fun Totes
Brightly colored cotton or canvas totes are a playful bag option for summer. They’re both roomy and eye-catching and, they can be eco-friendly as well when you point and click at GreenGirlWorld.com. These fun and functional bags are fully reversible and washable, so you don’t have to worry about them getting ruined at those outdoor activities.

It’s no secret that it is extremely important to protect your skin in the summer. As women, we want to be especially careful of our faces, working to avoid those splotches and wrinkles that can come with age and over exposure to the sun. I like to protect mine with Ambi Even and Clear Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. It blocks out the sun and gives my face a healthy summer glow.

Summer humidity can wreak havoc on your locks. Keep them in place and in check with a dainty headband--or a bold statement headband as your go-to hair accessory. Little Fille has the flyest custom pieces with tons of personality and a great retro feel. Color and braiding and bows—oh my! As always, Forever 21 has a shiny stable of cute, cheap goodies to help boost your collection.

A Signature Scent
The season calls for light, airy, floral scents. Currently on my wish list is Flora by Gucci, a delicious scent containing notes of Citrus, Peony and Rose and inspired by princesses past and present. There's no better time to smell like you've been bathed in flowers, than when you've spent a day outside.

Flip Flops
Flip flops are a basic summer essential. Handy for running errands, grabbing a quick lunch or wrangling with the kids, this practical footwear is a key component to keeping it simple; yet it is so much more than just a basic now that flip flops are available in a wealth of colors, prints and designs. Take a walk on the wild-side with a gold embellished animal print from Michael Kors; or step into a Nomad flip flop that sings the praises of the season by combining metallic silver with a floral accent.

Bright/Pastel Nail Polish
Dress up your fingers and toes in the best and brightest like Essie's mint candy apple. This soft green will make your fingers look cool even on the warmest day.

Statement Earrings
Too much jewelry on a hot day can be cumbersome and just downright hot! Besides, 'tis the season for simplicity. So, instead of layered looks, opt for clean and minimal; add a statement chandelier, hoop, dangling or embellished earring to turn up the fun factor and make your wardrobe pop. Earrings like Asos' dream catcher earrings are a pastel delight.

The perfect lip gloss
Lipstick is too heavy when it's warm out. A girl needs just a little bit of color and shine. Lancome 'Juicy Tubes Smoothie' is an ultra shiny gloss and comes in 8 colors with delectable names like Dreamsicle, Fruity Pop and Cherry Burst. Just reading them conjures visions of the neighborhood ice cream truck filled with icy goodies, and the soft stain left on the lips after consuming one of the colorful, fruity treats.

Run out and grab these must-haves now! When you have them handy, you’ll be fab for all your fun in the summer sun.

“My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”

Your Biggest Fan

Gazing at this shoe sends the imagination into a tailspin. Eye-catching in every way with its hot pink stiletto, egg shell heel and black ruffled fan in the front, the Your Biggest Fan Heel at ModCloth is certain to garner applause every time you enter or exit a room.

Its 4 ½ inch heel with tiny rhinestone begs for a night out on the town, complete with fabulous full-skirted dress, soft flowy hair and the honey on your arm. Toss your head back and take a twirl in them under the moonlight. Feeling more relaxed for evening? No problem! Wear with your favorite loose boyfriend jean, rolled up to show the shoe off of course, with a simple white tee--or skinny jeans and a strong-shouldered blazer.

For day, slip on the femininely arched footwear with the Fuchsia Palooza Dress--a truly feminine frock with tiny fuchsia polka dots woven into the thin fabric, and a wide collar with decorative buttons. Add leggings and you will be officially pretty in pink.

No matter how you wear them, you and Your Biggest Fan are sure to bask in mutual adoration.
