A Fine Time for Style

It’s almost back-to-school time, which means new clothing and shoes for the kid. Partially because part of the fun of going back to school is wearing all your new clothes, and partly because that guy grows like a weed; he is sure to return from his summer vacation taller and longer with at least a half size increase in shoe size. Additionally, this year is the big leap from elementary school to middle-schooler. A new scene, (some) new friends, new classes and teachers—and so the girl in me that loves to play around with clothes thinks perhaps some new looks as well. Not a total style transformation—just a slightly more mature edge. I have to be careful, of course, not to disturb the delicate balance of polo shirts and skater shoes to which he maintains a firm affiliation, and make only subtle additions to what he feels comfortable in.

Here are some of the looks I’m thinking of drawing inspiration from:

I love the casual feel of this wool coat. It’s a look easily transferable to boys.

The mix of the plaids on top is bold. It could be recreated with jeans.

My son would hate the jacket, and it would be a bit much for school, but this is fly even sans blazer.

Also providing inspiration is UK based retailer Next. They offer boys fashion for all occasions, are consistently on-trend and feature very cool accessories. I am a fan of the "bright reversible belt" which comes in a variety of colors--my favorite, I think, being the white. The "grey buckle biker boots" are the perfect mix of functional and cool. Next also has a selection of awesome graphic print tees and the "black mock leather bomber" is perfect for fall.

Prepping for the return to school was always a fun experience for me as I grew up. Refreshing my closet, organizing my schools supplies...it hinted at something new and exciting to come. I love it that I get to relive that feeling vicariously through my son.
